We could hear it, but we just couldn't see it...

Oh, and a very Happy New Year/Bonne Année, everyone! I enjoyed being by the river in East London listening to the wildly varying countdowns and cheers to midnight and also feeling like the best fireworks display in the world, ever, was happening on the other side of the city. We could hear it, but we just couldn't see it... It all felt like a depressing metaphor for my own life, really... (just kidding!)

It was all happening elsewhere...

Many many thanks to L, S and N for a spectacular three-course dinner and brilliant company, and to Lucy for the drool (gibber), Bea (aka Beastie) and Cat. Special thanks to M for lending his keys and leaving beers, square crisps and the one remote control to rule them all. Thanks to A for good company and laughs as always, even during what he appropriately describes as a "time of crapness". Next year can only be better! Thanks to all for the lovely SMS messages - 'Gutis niuis jahr from Munchen!' just past 11pm from the enviable M was the only one that got through within the hour - everyone else's came through much later in the evening while I was dosing through Wayne's World...

New Year's Eve: There's always such pressure for it to be the best night out of the year that it can only fail to live up to expectations. I think this New Year was pretty sudbued anyway, with the effects of the Asian tsunami still large in our minds; I certainly didn't feel like partying all night. Spent midnight alone in my thoughts, overlooking Madeira Drive watching the people of Brighton welcome in 2005.
